Thailand tourists attacked.

Several things I have learned from all my years in Thailand and Cambodia (I am sure applies to many other locations as well).

Thais and Khmers do not like to "social drink", they drink - they get drunk. They are not "happy drunks", they are belligerent or prone to violence when drunk.

They can also go from 0 to 100 in a blink of an eye. They do not show gradual levels of escalation in a confrontation. If you offend a Thai or Khmer, you better be on guard. You better de-escalate the situation very quick, and if they lost face, things can go south very quick - especially if drunk.

Don't ever underestimate the strength and viciousness of a 100 pound drunk Thai or Khmer female. Found this out the hard way.

Thais and Khmers never fight alone. If you get in a fight with a Thai or Khmer, you are going to be fighting with several of them. They gang up like a group of monkeys.

Tuk Tuk and Taxi drivers all carry blades or blunt objects, and will use them. Always arrange for a price before hand, or make sure have a meter. Do not try to short pay them. If you smell alcohol on their breath or suspect they are drunk, do not go with them.

If you are out alone, situational awareness and limiting yourself to no more than 1 drink per hour is very very wise. Never ever leave your drink unattended and watch them open it up (you could wake up in the morning without any money or your passport of even worse without a kidney - has happened several times in Phnom Penh, I **** you not).

Avoid crowded areas. Always look for avenues of egress.

Besides Thai and Khmers, in Thailand and Cambodia avoid bars/locales with groups of drunk Aussies, British Football hooligans and Russians.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
