Need help with the next step of customizing a 1911

Hey all, a little while ago I posted asking about a particular part; a Pachmayr thumb guard that replaces the plunger tube housing. Now I'm working on it and I need some advice as to what to do next and what routes to take.

Here's what I've got so far. The end result I'm looking for is to have my initials engraved on the shield. My question is if I should polish it down further now, and re-blue it, then have it engraved, or to have it engraved before blueing it.

Here is an example of what I'm going for, this is my Father's 1911 that I took the thumb guard to be engraved, "FL". I would like mine to have a bit more of a finished look however. Any advice would be appreciated!
