I had some modifications done to this pistol several years ago by a gunsmith who I no longer have contact with. One of the modifications he did was to fit a National Match barrel bushing. The pistol still has the stock barrel. The NM bushing did seem to result in a significant improvement in accuracy at 25yds.
At the time this was done, the stock recoil spring plug was replaced with an open-ended plug as would be used with a full-length recoil spring guide rod. But I am not using a full-length guide rod, nor do I have plans to do so.
Although the open-ended plug functions perfectly well, I find it to be a PITA when reassembling the field-stripped pistol. The edges of the open end are pretty sharp making it difficult to push the plug down against the pressure of the recoil spring enough to allow the bushing to be closed. The bushing fit to the slide is tight enough that I usually need to use a bushing wrench to open or close it.
Is there anything about the NM barrel bushing that requires the use of a special plug? Would I be able to replace the open-ended plug with a standard closed plug as sold by Wilson Combat, for example?
