Paperwork to Have In The Event Of Emergency

Thought this maybe needed it's own thread.

If you haven't already done this, you might want to consider making sure that you have someone designated to:

Have your Medical Power of Attorney. With HIPAA, it doesn't matter that it's your spouse. No MPOA? No information forthcoming about your medical condition.
In our home, I have wife's and she has mine. Then my sister has it and wife's niece has secondary. They only kick in for my sister and her niece if both of us are incapacitated simultaneously.

Same thing for a Durable Power of Attorney. My wife has mine. I have hers. If both of us are incapacitated, then my sister gets it, then wife's niece.

Debts? Every loan or mortgage I've ever paid off, I have the notarized copies indicating that I've paid them off in full. Those are in a fire-proof safe and will never be destroyed. Once had that come into play when a mortgage company sold the mortgage to the house I owned and had paid off years after I'd paid it off. I wasn't making payments so it went to collections. The collection agencies are a bunch of sharks and crooks and slime. Only by forwarding notarized copies of the paid off note and then threatening to sic the KS AG on them did I get them to back off. I demanded they send a written statement acknowledging that the note was paid in full and that they had no claim.

All of that paperwork is in with the titles and abstracts for all the property I own and have paid for in full.

Trust me when I tell you that it comes in handy when someone drops the ball and you start getting phone calls wanting you to pay for something you've already paid for.

And the MPOA/DPOA's come in handy when your wife is having a heart procedure and the person at the desk doesn't know who you are and won't let you know how things are going. Handing them a copy of the MPOA and informing them that a copy is on file in their records database will open them up immediately. And if need be, you can always ask to speak with their HIPAA Compliance Officer. That will bring instant results in almost all circumstances.
