I'm looking at a Remington Rand 1911A1 made '42-'43.
The serial number falls within a range of serial numbers that were duplicated by Colt. This is an early Remington Rand, one of the first 125,000 made, has a Type II slide and the checkered MSH. Fit is good, finish is maybe 60%, but no big rust spots, no major scratches and/or dings. It has a couple of punch marks where it looks as if the Rockwell Hardness Test was performed on the slide.
It also has a Colt barrel, but there are no arsenal rework marks on this pistol. Now, I know when RR first cranked up for the war effort, they were short on equipment and parts...they bought barrels from Colt, Springfield Armory, and (of course) High Standard. I don't have access to this pistol, so I can't disassemble it and look at barrel lug markings to see if it's an early field replacement barrel or a post-war barrel or even an original barrel.
My main question is this: If Colt duplicated the serial numbers in this gun's range (921700-1,041,404), how do I know whether the pistol has a Remington Rand or a Colt frame? Would I have to disassemble the pistol and look for internal markings/stamps on the frame?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice on this.
