Fusion Vs. Caspain Vs. Rebuild
First, the background, I have done some small work on a Springfield Mil-Spec, replacing all of the small parts with quality pieces, EGW, C&S, Wilson etc. Fitted a new thumb safety, over sized bushing and an extractor fitted and tension so that it passes safety checks and the 10-8 extractor test. I am by no means a gun smith, just handy and experienced with files from knife making (hobby, not profession). So, I have done a few things, slowly and with much reading and care. Other things I don't dare do like fit a slide to frame.
So, with that out of the way I am looking at one of three things for a commander sized 9mm build. Option 1: purchase a Fusion "Kit" with slide/frame and barrel fitted and do the rest of the work myself. Option 2: Caspian Slide and likely Foster frame (I love 1911's, my budget often screams Hi Point) have them fit the slide and frame and start work on an Ed Brown semi-fit barrel. Option 3: Purchase a Springfield Champion and start working to replace the small parts with higher quality parts.
The first 2 options will involve buying things as I save the money and then carefully fitting all of the small parts. The final work on the trigger job may be sent to a custom shop in the end depending on nerves and budget. This will quite a while to do. The 3rd option will put a functioning gun in my hand that I think will be a good base for frame, slide and barrel fit and I know I can handle the small parts work if I go slow and pay attention.
So, learned 1911 folks, do you have any recommendations on direction here? In the end, the money will be about the same for all 3 options. I hopefully wouldn't be over my head with a semi-fit barrel, but you never know and that is an expensive mistake to make. Be kind, be gentle and remember, this is my first time!
