"Pete Single" checkering? What exactly does this mean?

I keep seeing people refer to the checkering on the Wiley Clapp as "Pete Single" checkering. What exactly does this mean?

Each pistol frame is sent to Pete's shop where he laboriously hand-checkers each front strap? I doubt it.

Is it outsourced to Pete's shop, or done in-house at Colt?

Does it merely mean the STYLE of checkering?
