New Ithaca Navy
Just got this in and havn't had a chance to get some Kroil oil on it, but wanted to share it with the forum. I snapped a few pictures in the fading light and understand that they aren't the best. What I have is a lovely Navy Ithaca which shows little use, original finish and original barrel. The seller told me that it was owned by a former Naval officer and I asked whether he had any information on the vet. All he knew was the vet's name, which was John R Huggard and that he was from his same town. After Joe Holden greatly helped by providing the Ithaca shipping documents to confirm that it was indeed a Navy shipment gun (thank you Joe!), I decided to take a chance. I Googled the vet's name and came up with an interesting document listed in the Naval History and Heritage Command, which showed a picture of LST-1048 (USS Morgan County) "beached at Tinian, circa Sept 1945", and cited the photo being the courtesy of John R Huggard! I did some further research and found Mr Huggard's obituary which confirmed that he was a vet and passed away in the same town as the seller. True, I don't have any printed document showing that this pistol was assigned to LST-1048, but I think that the information at hand certainly points to it being there. The seller wasn't a gun guy and wasn't selling it for any sort of premium based on his knowledge of the vet. In fact, he only provided that info when I asked him about it. Kind of interesting to think that this Ithaca may have been on board LST-1048 or perhaps was being worn on the hip of Mr. Huggard when the photo of the ship was taken.
