Buggered Colt Series 80 FPS Safety!

samedi 23 avril 2016

Just sharing what happened a while ago:

Dry fired my blued Colt 1991 that I bought last November. Noticed that the end of the firing pin is " recessed in " its channel. Its not coming out as it is supposed to do after the hammer falls.

So, I did the pencil test to see if it is functional......nope. The pencil didn't fly out of the barrel. I tried detail stripping the slide.....no success initially. The firing pin wouldn't want to budge out, even with the safety plunger pressed in. I had to use an appropriate sized rod and stick it in the firing pin channel at the chamber area of the gun to push out the firing pin.

Took me some time and cussing, I needed some extra pair of hands from my son. After several minutes, the firing pin tail finally came out. I had to pry it out using a needle nose pliers. Some strength was needed to take it out completely. Same with the firing pin spring.

The Cause: Some burrs developed at the neck of the firing pin safety plunger and additional burrs developed at the " neck " of the firing pin itself.

I removed all the series 80 component of the slide. I have a spare stainless EGW Colt series 70 firing pin laying around and a spare new firing pin spring as replacement.

I ordered a standard thickness frame filler from Brownells, and when it arrives, I'll remove the two plunger in the frame, so as to prevent the sear from walking and being damaged.

Still trying to figure out how those parts developed the burrs as I am not a compulsive dry-firing fiend.
