Reviving old posts

mercredi 1 juin 2016

I've been a Forum member so a few months and I freely admit I have, and probably will again, run afoul of a rule. Heck I've posted items in sub-forums that were not the best choice for that post. Our Moderators will either move the post, had that done a couple times, or alert me as the original poster that it should have gone elsewhere.

Our forum has rules, they seem to be very effective at keeping this a relevant forum and they help keep things current. There is a thread on this sub-forum where the 45 post rule is discussed. Another rule new members often run up against is the "Don't revive old posts" rule. I'm not sure if that is the correct name but it will get you close enough. This rule states that old posts, the ones that have been inactive for several months to even a few years, should not be revived (no new posts). It seems odd, specially when a new member comes across a thread that they have a question about or wish to comment on. Sorry, you will be quickly reminded of the rule and the old thread locked.

While this seems harsh to some, it does help keep the forum current. Heck, some old posts were made and commented on by members who are no longer with us. Sometimes the post is old enough the original poster has forgotten just what the thread was about.

Now if you are a new member and come across a old thread that you have some input on or a question about what do you do? Easy, start a new thread or send the original poster a Private Message. Both options are free, won't cost you a dime, and certainly is within forum rules.

I'm old but not old enough to know just exactly why this rule was created but that does not matter. It's a rule, it does not cause any harm to follow the rule, and I think our forum runs pretty well within the rules.

I don't know if Forum rules are ever revisited or even if they should be. Just remember they are there to help keep this one of the best Gun Forums on the net.

I started a thread on another sub-forum and received some interesting replies and I was reminded this sub-forum would be a better place for it. I do know some members believe this rule is not needed, however they did not offer any real valid reasons why they feel it should be changed. I have no problem with it but I'd be interested in hearing other opinions.

By the way, I'm just a regular member and don't have a vote so even if you convince me the rule should be changed I can't do a thing about it (but we do know the Moderators, who may have a vote, will also be reading it).
