MS VM-2 or SS2

I must confess to being a little heavy for my 5'9" frame. IWB has always been tough for me, but I'm determined to lose some weight and make it work. My EDC is a 4" Wilson Ultralight Compact Carry. For those of you with considerable IWB carry, would you choose a VM2 or SS2 for overall comfort? I have a VM2 on order but could change it based on your advise. Maybe I should get one each of them and just see for myself. Thanks for your help.

Anyone Ever Been Rear Ended While Carrying IWB or SOB?

Last month I had to go to Berkeley, CA for my son's graduation from Berkeley - smart kid he is makes his daddy proud!! I drove my 1996 F250 out there and got rear ended on I-80 north of Berkeley at midnight Saturday night. The brilliant CA DOT shut down the freeway for routine maintenance during graduation weekend. I was almost stopped for the traffic jam when I got slammed into by a drunk who was doing about 35-40. I had my 1911 unloaded and locked in a Tuffy per CA law. Cops paid no attention to my "Charlton Heston is my President" and NRA stickers. This got me wondering if anyone's ever been rear ended while carrying and had the gun pushed into their spine and if you got hurt. I drove away with a bent bumper, tailgate and left rear bedside. It'll be fixed. The Yaris who hit me was totally demolished. Driver almost died but I hear he's out of the hospital now. No insurance on his part of course!!

Used Kimber desert Warrior...need advice.

I have a local guy who has a modified Kimber Desert Warrior for sale / trade. The sights have been changed to TFO's, single sided Wilson Combat safety, Wison Combat trigger, frame and mainspring housing has the golf ball treatment, also comes with a set of Crimson Trace Desert Cammo laser grips installed. The condition is a solid 95% with a little slide wear, barrel hood wear on the black barrel and the bushing. We have traded before, so I know he is a stand-up guy. He wants $600 cash and my Glock 26. This gun has the black frame and desert slide. The factory items are also included as well as Wison mags.

What do you guys say? He wanted $800 cash, but after I told him that the gun was way from stock anymore, he agreed and priced accordingly.

I rarely believe people's accuracy stories...

I've seen maybe 3 people (in the last 5 years at various ranges) in person that shot REALLY well, but the vast majority of shooters couldn't keep a 5" group at 10-15 yards, "seasoned" shooter or not.

Hard to believe a lot of internet stories where everyone's an expert shooter lol

I'm sure there are lots of highly proficient shooters out there, just... apparently not anywhere around this area.

Beretta 90 Two or 92FS Centurion?

Got one of each (used of course) in my gun shipment to the shop. Both are nice and point decently. Each has their "personality" so to speak. But it got me curious.

For you Beretta fans out there. Of the two which would you choose, all things being equal as far as condition, number of mags and accessories, etc.?

Would you prefer the 90 Two or the 92FS Centurion? Why?

I'm going to have hand surgery soon, so I am not going to be able to hold something with a grip safety for quite some time.

I've gone back to carrying a G19. It's bone stock, but I was thinking about upgrading the sights to something more 1911ish and was considering 10-8 or the Wilsons.

The trigger also could use some work and I was considering the SSVI.

I know many of you carry Glocks and I was looking for some input.

Leaving it stock is also fine, but I need some projects to keep me busy.

I worked at a gun shop in Texas to 1969 to 1974

We had a small contract may have been Texas only I don't know but it was to install S&W K-Frame sights on 3 or 4 dozen Brownings. I know that's not many but Id sure be interested in seeing if any are still in circulation.

We milled and tapped for the rear sight, sweated on a ramp style front sight, we had to build a fixture for the front, experiment a lot to get the right set up then we reblued most of them later we did some more in electroless nickel (Nitex) and removed magazine disconnect. Then I got to test fire them!

I learned to use a mill and sweat with silver solder on these, never had one come back I was 14yrs old. Bet those officers (or their department) didn't know a teen age kid did the mods on their duty gun.

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I don't find any mention of it when I conducted a search.

Does anyone know the story of the abundance of Remington made loose slides that are currently on the market? Several vendors are selling them. I'm particularly interested in the Stainless RI Enhanced slides that are selling for around $150.

I'm curious why Remington dumped them on the market unless there was a model specification change and they could not longer use them.

Thanks

The only data I found is the following, what you think?

I sent in my slide for some work. I asked the customer service rep that I've been emailing if they'd notify me when they receive it. I was told that they'd be giving me a call to confirm the work I wanted done.

For those of you who have sent stuff in, how long did it take for them to contact you between the time they received your item and when they contacted you?

Thanks.

Non lead ammo and the future of ammunition development: A inside look/review Part 1

A quick background: This is a review I have been working on for the forums for a few months now. One of many of my professional shooting responsibilities these days is that I work as a R&D for a Ammunition Laboratory. We develop every kind of ammunition mainly for LE and Military application. I had to ask permission to do this review and it had to be released as not to give away any sensitive or proprietary information. Good news is that with all the R&D for LE and Military, there will also be similar consumer lines closely mirroring the Pro stuff. Obviously the consumer wont get the very specialty stuff directly designed for the Military but from evaluating both, the consumer gets a very similar product. Here is the review:

Part 1

Non lead ammo and the future of ammunition development:

The future of ammunition isnt that hard to predict. The EPA as well as other outside forces have imposed their concerns on the ammunition industry for awhile now. The outrageous expense of lead clean up at public and private ranges have close many. A lot of this depends on which state you live in. That said, my concerns about my ammo are that it is reliable and accurate. I don’t want to seem insensitive to the environment but my heart is all about performance. I am all for non-lead bullets providing they equal or better the current high performance lead based ammo. I think those days are here. I have been involved with testing some very interesting ammunition for Law Enforcement and Military application over the last few months. There is also a consumer line that mirrors most of the LE/ Military version and this makes sense because of all the R&D in this kind of ammunition is expensive. I was allowed to do this review through the Ammunition Laboratory as long as I did not give any proprietary secrets so I will give a general review and most of all the ammo pictured is from the consumer line. LE and Military have certain specs they require for the bullets of tomorrow. What this means is that their specs will become the standard of ammo for the general public.

The Test Firearms and Caliber: As with most LE and Military testing, there are certain platforms that are required. I am testing with the required firearms as well as others not on the list.

My test firearms are: Sig Sauer P226, P229, P220, P227 Glock 17,19, 23, M&P 45, 380, Walther PPQ 9mm, PPQ 45, PPK, HK USP, HK USP Compact, 1911, LWRC M6 iC, HK416. The Calibers being evaluated are 380, 9mm, 38spl, 357 Sig, 40S&W, 45acp, 5.56, 7.62, 300 BLK.

The AMMO:
There are two non lead bullets being tested. A Zinc general range and mil spec bullet to replace the lead based fmj. This would be used as a range and mil-spec duty round. It is currently called “Zclean” in its consumer name. Its main component is zinc as well as other proprietary compositions.

The next is a compressed copper Frangible. It is currently labeled as a “Alchemist C3 round” for non-LE sale. This is used as training rounds for CQB, door breaching, hostage rescue, etc. Some may know these training areas as the “kill house”. These enclosed areas have hard walls such as cinder blocks and other real world hard surfaces where ricochets and “bounce backs” are extremely dangerous with conventional ammo. Air quality is also a factor and there are guidelines that must be met. Cheaper alternative frangible ammo was known to create a high content of airborne silica. The Alchemist are engineered to stay well within the guidelines. The last performance factor that has been associated with frangible bullets are the content of iron. These older types of frangible bullets have been known to spark when hitting steel plates and cause range fires. The Alchemist and their LE counter parts have eliminated the spark issues with not having any iron in them. As you can see there are a lot of factors that go into a modern frangible. Both types of ammo use a sealed non lead primer that does not absorb moisture. This gives them a very long shelf life that most military ammo is known for.

Zclean (non lead bullet) testing:
I will first start with the Zclean ammo since this will be the most popular for myself and most shooters. I quickly found many benefits of this kind of bullet for the average shooter. First, as the name implies, it is actually very clean to shoot. Shockingly so that after 500 rounds of shooting through many different platforms of firearms, all remain cleaner than what they would have been with a quality lead fmj.

Obviously cleaner ammo means less cleaning for the LE or soldier in the field as well as the serious shooter that takes extended tactical classes. Next is the inherent accuracy. Groups are as good or better than what I typically get with premium ammunition like HST or Gold Dot. I actually used several calibers of HST as the control round to compare against.

Because it is not a lead round, bullet weights of the Zinc bullets are different than their lead counter parts but poa/poi are the same. For example 9mm ='s 100 grain, 40S&W='s 125 grain, 45acp='s 155 grain, etc.... I tested the rifle zinc rounds but at this time only the pistol calibers are ready for prime time release.

The ammo with its truncated design inherently feeds better and has functioned flawlessly with all firearms tested.
The Zink bullets has not created any issue with any build up in either conventional or polygonal rifling. They also have a lubed characteristic between the bullet and barrel from the zinc. This is kind of a added benefit not foreseen at the beginning of the testing. At this point with 1000s of rounds I have shot, I see no down sides to this bullet. There was only one issue brought up to me and its either a positive or negative quality depending if you are using this as a practice round or NATO military replacement. It penetrates better than the conventional FMJ. This means it may ricochet (or penetrate) with poorly designed steel bullet traps. Some may see a tactical advantage for these characteristics, especially the military. Both of the “Alchemist” frangible and “Zclean” zinc ammo ran flawlessly in full auto weapons that they were tested. I can confirm there were many more than the ones mentioned above.

The SC Senate finally passed H3799 last night, without amendments, which means SC and GA will now recognize each other's permits for carry. It now goes to the Governor for signature, and she is expected to sign it.

An amendment was proposed for this bill that would have all other states to be recognized by SC, but the Senate did not have the votes to pass the bill with such amendment added. Maybe next January when they reconvene.

A small victory.

I've been trying to read up on charcoal blue in the sense of caring for it. Not much around for that, just about how it was created.

I did see one comment that suggested that charcoal blue is a delicate finish that must be kept oiled. Is that true? It does seem to be getting a little darker after repeated oilings....

Thanks

I've been using 18.5lb springs for a long time. It's not going to change the recoil impulse, just the feel.

I've never found a smoother shooting 45 than a 5" all steel 1911.

Questions for the group. Has anyone ever experienced problems with the firing pin retaining pin in an AR bolt? If so is it a common occurrence? I saw another thread that mentioned a KNS pin replacement, and was wondering if anyone had any experience(not just opinions, actual experience) with this replacement pin. It seems cheap for the peace of mind it might offer, but I myself had never had issues with breakage on any AR I've used. Are there any downsides to the KNS pin? My area has usually been the M-1A/14 platform so please pardon me if it seems like a new guy question. I usually tend to err on the side of caution( I have spare extractors and ejectors and firing pins in my M-1A kit among with a BAD armoror tool in my rifle kits)as I like to be ready, even though I've never had a problem with either of my M-1A's. Thanks for reading this far, looking forward to replies.

Learn from my mistakes / better reloading

I want to ask about case prep but feel the need to give a little background first. Back in 1984 I was living in Tulsa and a buddy of mine had a Colt .45Gold Cup. He let me shoot it a few times and I was hooked...I wanted a .45 but couldn't afford one like his. The Tulsa Gun Show was coming up and I decided I'd buy a .45 there. He suggested looking for a 70 series and showed me what to look for on the slide. I bought one for $325 and it seemed to shoot fine.

I would shoot and reload using my RCBS. One night we were at an indoor range shooting when my pistol exploded. Only by the grace of God did I escape with only a small cut under my eye, one on my hand, and no hair left on my right hand thanks to the powder burns. Upon closer examination, the explosion cracked the frame, blew the magazine out of the pistol, and pushed the bullet half way down the barrel before swelling the barrel in the slide.

Turns out I had purchased a "parts gun" with a Colt 70 series slide but with a frame made from some type of pot metal. The explosion was either caused by the round detonating when the slide wasn't completely in battery (I know, it's not supposed to happen) or a powder overload.

I had the gun fixed and began shooting again. From time to time the slide wouldn't go all the way home, which scared the CRAP out of me!! I took the gun to a .45 gunsmith in Ringgold, Georgia (great guy ) who said he couldn't find anything wrong with the gun. However, I kept having the same problem. I took it back to him with some of my ammo and he said my reloads were the problem. He and another guy shot it with both factory loads and their reloads and it worked fine. They checked my ammo and it was very inconsistent, as I wasn't checking the overall length after loading.

I posted a message asking what I needed to do to get started reloading rifle and received lots of good feedback - thanks to all. The feedback made me want to do a much, much better job with my pistol reloads. So I'm going to start prepping the cases and checking the length before and after seating the bullets.

To that end, I thought about buying a case trimmer. Then I watched a few vids about deburring and champfering and decided I needed to do that (at least on rifle). Then I thought "rather than do it by hand, why not get a case prep tool". But if I buy a case trimmer and the tools to do it by hand I could by something like the fancy-shmancy one that trims and preps.

If anyone has any thoughts on the prepping hardware I'd love to hear. Sorry it's so long.

The primary use would be for target shooting for now, but more could come into play later.

Also, does the Armalite use a proprietary barrel system of their own?

throat question

0 commentaires
I posted before about a failure to feed issue on my 9mm RIA. Ive been told to check lots of things, the magazines, extractor, breech face, among other things.

After checking all these and all seem to be ok, I have one question.

When a barrel throat is properly ramped as in grinding a ramp in no the actual ramp that exists on some barrels, does the throat have a straight ramp into the chamber? Or is it kinda rounded in towards the chamber?

Mine seems to be rounded in (and poorly polished, Its not smooth and mirror like some of the others i see on here). The bullet tips seem to catch on the shallow part of the rounded throat.

I see videos of people making it a flat ramp, and i have been considering...what do you guys think? Maybe before that i should just use a compound and polish it a bit before shaving meat off?

Also, I am mindful that there is a gap to maintain between the feed ramp and bottom of the barrel throat.

Foam has always been an enemy of guns for long term storage and tight cases can also trap the same moisture they are so good at keeping out. I think if you regularly coat it with your favorite lube/rust protectant, check on it often, and keep the foam dry, you should be good to go.

I too would keep dessicant in there as well and replace every so many months. Be careful.

Colt .380 Auto Mustang Pocketlite Mirror Polished

Hey, Guys. I finally got a bite on a .380 Auto Colt Mustang Pocketlite awhile ago, and I finished it up yesterday. Here are a few photos taken this morning. This Mustang has a stainless steel slide and aluminum frame. As with the Defender, the aluminum alloy Colt uses polishes up beautifully and is a great match for the stainless slide. Some other SS/aluminum lightweights, particularly the Kimbers, use a different aluminum alloy that has a noticeably different hue from the stainless once it's polished up. The Colt metals are always exceptional polish-wise, however, even their lower end models.

I've also got a Colt M1991A1 and a full stainless Colt Defender coming up in line for polishing in the next week or so!

Dent in case

Breaking in Colt commander, getting small dent in brass. Plan on having ejection port flared as part of the build for this 1911. Almost all of the dent comes out after resizing, does this dent weaken brass over time? First 1911 without flared ejection port

What Recoil Spring?

What Recoil Spring?

Just picked up my second 1911, a Rock Island Tac Ultra CS (w/FLGR). Love the gun, but I know that Officer-sized 1911's require the recoil spring be changed every 500-700 rounds. Looking for the right Wolff recoil spring to buy as a backup. Can anyone point me towards or post a link to the correct spring for this model?

I've had this pistol for awhile now but with work and all time just hasn't been there to shoot it. The last couple of weeks have been our annual qualifications at work and I decided to take it out and shoot it. The first 50 rounds through it was on our qualification course. After that I managed to put another 250 rounds through it with no issues. I had one Wilson magazine that gave me a couple of issues but the other magazines to include a couple of Colt 9MM magazines worked just fine. This is my third 1911 in 9MM and like the other two it just makes you smile. There are a couple of issues with the pistol but they are me and will be corrected. Like my TRP and other pistols from SA with a checkered front strap the bottom has some sharp points, a little file took care of that. I also don't especially care for the frame color but who know it might grow on me. The thing shoots POA/POI for the most part though I didn't do any in depth test of that. The ammo shot consisted of American Eagle 124 grain training ammo and Winchester 124 grain +P duty ammo. No issues with either except for the one magazine which leads me to believe the magazine is the culprit. I plan on putting some more rounds through it in the next couple of week work permitting. I know everyone likes pictures so here she is with a target with 100 rounds or so through it. I am looking forward to the 45 ACP version of this pistol, maybe I will have grown to like the gray frame. Of course I do know someone who does an amazing Cerekote job so that might happen soon.

I'm interested in getting an extractor. My research shows that Challis makes one . They say you need a different one for slim line bushings . So do I need to get both at $24.99 a piece ? What do you guys use ?

Ever regret selling your 1911?

0 commentaires

bought a '66 Browning High Power in '69 when I was stationed in Germany. In '75, had to sell it for tuition. Regretted ever since, and eventually spent a lot more replacing it with another mint "T" series BHP. Can't tell you what to do, but I suspect more folks regret selling pistols than are happy to have done so.

Just acquired a mechanically nice 1911 with a terrible spray finish. Maybe ceracoat or some epoxy type. Don't want to sandblast or emory the finish off (so I can preserve the numbers). Checked the Brownells cat and don't see chem strippers for this type finish .Any help out there? Thanx.

New CNC machined gun parts

We just completed a run of Colt guide rods for the Mustang series, they are 416 stainless and hardened for wear resistance. $30.
Llama recoil plugs, new production blued steel with hand checkered button, $20.
416 Stainless triggers for all these guns; Colt Mustang, Mustang plus II, Gov't .380, Sig P238 and P938. Also, I wish to try them in the new .380 Kimber which looks like a Sig copy, which was a Colt copy, which was a Star copy.
$40 natural stainless color, $50 blued.

Making parts for 35 years.

Slim Grips to Standard Grips

Slim Grips to Standard Grips

Hi, I have a Dan Wesson Guardian that I am lightly customizing to fit me better. It comes with slim line grips and I am considering changing to standard width vz grips.
Now, do I need all new screws and bushings for this to work? or can I just use the hardware that came with it.
Thanks in advance,
