Benchmade Mini Griptillian

After 2 years of carrying a Kershaw Cryo I decided that it was time to update my EDC blade. Now after recently becoming a convert to the 1911 lifestyle I was thinking of getting a knife with more of a traditional style of carry. You know, the kind you deploy with a finger nail. So I looked at different Case knives that I thought would match well with my Ruger SR1911. Then I thought, why did you choose a 1911 for EDC? You chose it because it was practical. It shoots better than you do and it is a proven system. With that in mind I was set on getting an old school knife design that my grandfather carried. But before I made a $100 purchase I carried a cheap toothpick Buck Knife for a few weeks. What I discovered was I didn't like the 2 handed operation of opening and closing. Did I really want to buy a $100 version of this knife? No, I did not. Instead I settled on a modern day classic. The Benchmade Mini Griptillian. It opens and closes easily with one hand. It's basic and simple. It's not exactly cheap at the $90 I paid for it, but I believe it is superior to the case knives I looked at. It's razor sharp and holds a good sharp edge. It actually matches my SR1911 well. My gun has updated Magpul MOE grips that match the Mini-G well. This knife will last me for the foreseeable future. I couldn't be happier.

my dad has an old Sterling Stainless .25 auto. Took it out shooting at the range and are getting light strikes causing a failure to fire every couple rounds.

I'm guessing the problem is that a spring has weakened. Pin looks fine.

Interested in opinions.

Range day

I would have posted this in a brand forum, but, as you can see, it does not fit in any single one. Just a great day shooting 250 rounds out of three good 1911's. I love Saturday. Dan Wesson Cbob, Wilson Combat Stealth, and a Ed Brown Executive Target. All in 45 ACP. All shoot great to the same POA.

Nice Railgun Tweak by Evolution Armory

So, there I was, in the Congo, surfing the web on my iPad. I came across this website that had a primitive man carrying a firearm. Instinctively, I was intrigued. The website said, "Arming the Good Guys", then the website asked me, "Are you one of the good guys?" I thought to myself, "uh-uh (primitive for, I guess so)." Then the website said, "Let's Talk". So, I broke out my EHF satellite phone, dialed the number on the website, and said, "Ung ont teb", the voice on the other end said, "Oh, ok, you want a hard fit threaded threaded barrel for your Railgun". To which I said, "why yes, yes I do".

Ok, so it didn't actually go down exactly like that. But, Dave @ Evolution Armory came through big. He hard fit the stainless NHC barrel and barrel bushing w/plug and black IonBonded the parts. Him and Mark were both very responsive and provided frequent updates. I don't think those Gents ever sleep.

I hit the range today for a quick function test. I don't have my .45 suppressor yet, so obviously that phase of the operation will need to take place at a later time. For now, I just blasted 50 rounds of hardball and 25 rounds of hollow point, using various models of Wilson Combat magazines.

The pistol performed without a glitch. I only shot from the 7 yard line, although it may have been closer to 8 . But, I'm not a target shooter, so that's the line I always stay planted at.

Overall, I'm very pleased, Thanks Dave! Good call on the IonBond, there's not even a single scratch on the barrel after 75 rounds, but I'll try harder next time to change that.

Thinking about getting my vbob refinished and a few things done to it. Where would everyone send it to? Either some kind of black finish or going with a matte or brushed chrome finish. I would also like to have a few things done to it wherever I decide to send it.

Remember Kesselring's?

After the original shop lost their FFL, one of the family members and the original shipping clerk, who held an FFL, opened Northwest Performance Firearms in the newly constructed "Skagit Shooting Range" in Burlngton, WA., two years ago.
As it happens, NWPF lost their FFL two weks ago - paper work "irregularities" - I believe the saga has ended. The owners of SSR will now try to resurrect the firearms retail space, starting with a modest inventory. I hope they make it work, competition is good but they are less rhan a mile away from Skagit Arms, a well run store with more than adequate inventory and awaiting completion of their new, much larger facility.

Picked up a Kobra Carry

0 commentaires
I purchased a slightly used kobra carry this week from fellow forum member 45caldude. My first semi-custom 1911 was a special forces 45 gen3 with original chainlink pattern about 5 years ago. Since then I have owned many different offerings from most companies. The kobra carry was the first 1911 that truly caught my attention those 5 years ago, but when I was ready to purchase I found the special forces in stock. I sold the SF a couple years back to fund something else that eventually funded something else and on and on...

So last week I saw this KC posted for sale on another forum and the time was right. I made a deal for it and it's now mine. I shot it today and really enjoyed the experience. Accuracy was great and it was comfortable to shoot as well. It has more felt recoil than my NH Marvel 45, but I expected that. Total round count is now 300 between me and the previous owner, so it's not even broken in yet. I'll be spending more time in this sub-forum as I'm back in the Brown club. Here are a few pics of the pistol and a target from today (5 shots at 7 yards):

A Bit of Improvement

Got out to the range today. So nice to see improvement. Been shooting over 40 years but, this is my first pistol (45 1911A1) Pretty dang hot with my 6" S&W model 28 (Highway Patrolman), so the shift and learning curve with the45 had me a bit frustrated the 1st couple of outings. Now that I've got approx. 500 rds. through it, I'm really digging it. Stayed in the black all day today @ 25 yds. except for a couple of fliers I knew were crap the instant I pulled the trigger. Got to get me an extended beaver tail. Once that hammer whacks you (and it did) it's hard to put that out of your head. I am an engine overhaul guy
so I am used to machining and precision measurement. Whose "drop-in" beavertail would you all recommend? Thanks for all the info and support thus far fellas. Sure seems like a great group of guys. Jim.

I'm wondering if anybody has these for their Loaded model. I'd like to pick up a pair but obviously I don't know, aside from calling, if there is a cutout for the ambi. safety on the right grip. Of course, it wouldn't be much risk to take a gamble.

Also, has anybody been able to specifically get darker grips from SA? I say this because the grips that mine shipped with were half red instead of a dark brown. I'd like to get a much darker pair.

New Colt Series 70 o1970A1CS not locking back on last round - help

0 commentaires
My new Colt o1970A1CS is not locking back on the last round about 90% of the time.

The magazine follower is over riding the slide stop, when this occurs, the magazine does not drop free because the magazine follower is above the slide stop.

This is happening with both GI factory Colt magazines that came with the gun.

The slide locks back when just cycling the gun by hand on an empty magazine.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

9mm 1911 cycling issue

0 commentaires
I am trying to work through a cycling issue. I have a new (purchased in the fall) Ed Brown 9mm 5" 1911. I understand the 9mm 1911's can be finicky and it could be the gun, or the springs or the ammo, and I am trying to work through it because this gun is a blast to shoot and groups like crazy. I had some ejection issues where the rounds were hitting me in the face and occasional stove pipe. I sent it to Brown and they recognized it needed to be fine tuned in the extractor and ejector. They ran it quite a bit and said it was fine. Got it back and it was much better, ejected 3 to 5 feet out the side.
I compete in IDPA with a Brown Kobra in 45, so I wanted a 9mm for IDPA, so this is my IDPA gun as well.
I still get an occasional stove pipe. It doesn't happen very often, maybe one in 100 shots. I also get an odd occurrence where the brass gets crunched. When the crunched brass happens, it ejects, but it falls at my feet and is crunched. Typically the bass ejects 3 to 6 feet to the side. Now, when I start shooting it runs fine for the first 30 or so rounds, so maybe its my oil?? Currently using FP10 shooters choice. So, I know 9mm 1911's need to be fine tuned. I am using my hand loads of 124 gr Bayou RN lead coated bullets on 4.3 gr of Bullseye which Chrono's at 1120ish fps. So its not a really light load, but it is a little softer than factory. I am using a factory standard 10# recoil spring. I tried some new loads using HS6 and it was snappier, and the 20 rounds I tested cycled fine.
So do I try a 9# recoil spring? Or load up stronger load, but that defeats my purpose for IDPA. Whats causing the crunched brass? Thanks!!

Multiplier: Now Picked Up a Valor VBob...

Perusing the local Armslist, I saw a low round (~400 rounds) Valor VBob for sale. It looked virtually unfired from the pics. So I contacted the seller and we met this morning. Bought it right on the spot—$1,400 (2015 date of manufacture, I think; and he bought it about two or three months ago). How did I do?
Needed cleaning desperately, but other than that it is mint. Just cleaned it up. Will get it and its bigger sibling out tomorrow for their first test run(s). Always wanted a 5" and Commander-size Valor. Difficult to believe they're both here. I'd say it has been a good week.
These things just multiply, don't they?
Since this is my first Commander-size 1911, I'm curious if anyone has a preference between these and the full. For those who have both (Valors), which do you prefer? Holding either is a delight (the VBob is really comfortable), so I think how they shoot will probably make the difference.

Fusion Vs. Caspain Vs. Rebuild

Fusion Vs. Caspain Vs. Rebuild

Greetings forums folks. This is my first thread after reading and using this place as a resource for a while now. I am at a firearms cross roads.

First, the background, I have done some small work on a Springfield Mil-Spec, replacing all of the small parts with quality pieces, EGW, C&S, Wilson etc. Fitted a new thumb safety, over sized bushing and an extractor fitted and tension so that it passes safety checks and the 10-8 extractor test. I am by no means a gun smith, just handy and experienced with files from knife making (hobby, not profession). So, I have done a few things, slowly and with much reading and care. Other things I don't dare do like fit a slide to frame.

So, with that out of the way I am looking at one of three things for a commander sized 9mm build. Option 1: purchase a Fusion "Kit" with slide/frame and barrel fitted and do the rest of the work myself. Option 2: Caspian Slide and likely Foster frame (I love 1911's, my budget often screams Hi Point) have them fit the slide and frame and start work on an Ed Brown semi-fit barrel. Option 3: Purchase a Springfield Champion and start working to replace the small parts with higher quality parts.

The first 2 options will involve buying things as I save the money and then carefully fitting all of the small parts. The final work on the trigger job may be sent to a custom shop in the end depending on nerves and budget. This will quite a while to do. The 3rd option will put a functioning gun in my hand that I think will be a good base for frame, slide and barrel fit and I know I can handle the small parts work if I go slow and pay attention.

So, learned 1911 folks, do you have any recommendations on direction here? In the end, the money will be about the same for all 3 options. I hopefully wouldn't be over my head with a semi-fit barrel, but you never know and that is an expensive mistake to make. Be kind, be gentle and remember, this is my first time!

300 Blackout Question

0 commentaires
If you buy a factory made SBR (Short Barrel Rifle), the process would be the same as with a suppressor. As an individual or through a trust you purchase the rifle, the manufacturer ships it to your dealer using an ATF Form 3, and then you file a Form 4 with a $200 fee, and receive a tax stamp eventually.

Most actually "manufacture" their own SBR. You get an appropriate lower, engrave your information on it, and submit a Form 1 with $200 to the ATF. Once you have your tax stamp, you can legally pair your lower with an upper of less than 16" in length.

That's a great simplification of course. The ATF is about to change the rules in July for how a trust purchases NFA items, so there is a huge rush on now of people submitting for tax stamps. It took 4 months for me to get back a couple of Form 1s at the beginning of the year. The wait will be much longer by the time July comes.

My Supergrade Project

It seems like about a year ago I started a project. (Actually, all I did was pay other people to do things.)

I bought this Supergrade Compact from an acquaintance.

Then I saw this picture. I can't remember who posted it, but I decided to "acquire" the idea.

First I photoshopped the Color Case Hardening onto my pistol.

It looked OK, so I sent it to Turnbull to blend a roundbutt magwell, gold bead front sight, color case harden the frame, and do the Turnbull Blue on the slide and small parts. I ordered grips from Brian Challis

This is what the frame looked like being packed to go to Turnbull

Here it is back from Turnbull before Challis Grips

And then sometiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime later, the Challis grips arrived. They really woke the pistol up!
These pics were taken outside, so you will see reflections of the surroundings in the polished bluing.

This interesting 1943 COLT does not belong to me as it's for sale with a reputable gunshop near here; it belongs to the lot of firearms sent to Argentina at the end of WWII and the Argies marked the slide also with ARA Armada Republic Argentine and added their crest; I think it would have been interesting to share.

I need to share my excitement and I don't think any of us get sick of looking at these things.. I just won this on Gunbroker on Wednesday, and it shipped same day, got it yesterday and cleaned it thoroughly. It's used with allegedly 500 or so rounds down the pipe. The seller's pictures were not very good and the bluing looked messed up but an email to him and he said it was very nice and that it was oil from the bag. Well, it arrived and there isn't a scratch on it, absolutely perfect, made in June 2014. I'm thrilled with it , top notch fit to everything. I got it at an incredibly low price, I'm assuming due to the not so great pictures. Thank you all for not bidding on this one!

Conan Classic Bore Appearance

When cleaning my Classic yesterday, I noticed an unusual appearance in the bore. It appears to have little specks or grit in the bore. More persistent scrubbing of the barrel did not make it disappear. (My LGS does not have a borescope.)

I have shot a lot (probably 300-500) of coated bullets through this weapon, however, I have also shot them in other 1911's without this occurring.

Just curious if any of you other classic owners have seen this phenomena.

The video title refers to this gun as “superposed,” which some may find confusing. Threaded 1908

Finished our prototype barrels for the Colt 1908 Pocket Hammerless yesterday and took them to the range today. Functioned perfectly, even with hollowpoints, both threaded and non threaded barrels. I need to get a Nano though, the ti-rant is too big for these pistols. Should start first regular "production" run next week, but it will be fairly limited as I am unsure of how much demand there will be for either the threaded or non although I imagine more will want the non-threaded. All of these barrels will be marked to try to keep someone for passing it as original in a pistol.

Here is a video of my friend shooting it for the first time. Needs to work on the both eyes open shooting and firing this platform as it was his first time with the '08.

Billy : Two ways you can do it .
A- Order right through Springfield . You just call them and put a deposit down .

B- Order through your FFL or LGS . They call and place the order put a deposit
down , make payment whatever .
or
C-buy it from gunbroker .

Wait time seems to be around 28 months right now .

Good luck .

Checkered Arched Mainspring Housings...What Choices are There?

0 commentaires
Hey all.

I'm looking to replace the old, ragged looking Arched Mainspring Housing with a new one that enhances the beauty of a basic blued COLT.

The one I have now is arched and serrated. I now want one that is Arched and CHECKERED. The only place I found that has them is Rock River Arms which has them in 20, 25 and 30 LPI. I saw the BLUED versions and I don't know if they have them in stainless. They do look really nice.

Do you all know of other makers or retailers that have arched and serrated MSH's in blue?

Please post if you know of any others and of course if you have pics of your 1911 with an arched and checkered MSH please post them. I never get tired of seeing beautiful 1911's!!

Thanks everyone for the help.

Magazine, Springfield or Wilson?

Was looking at Cheaper then dirt website and want to buy 2 more mags then the 2 that came with my RO 1911 Stainless.

I worry about the 8 round jamming after a few quick articles I read, but I was assured by many here as long as its a quality mag, there shouldn't be too much trouble.

This gun is simply a range gun, I don't really like the big bumps on the bottom of most after market mags and I was about to buy two of these

2 8 round mags

or a wilson combat mag which might be a few bucks more.

If its known that Wilson Combat mags much better mags, what would be model for the closest looking mag like the Springfield?

Thanks!

California "legal" guns

I'm in a family position where I HAVE to go to the people's republic of California once or twice a year. Before anyone from California objects to my characterization of that benighted land, I lived and worked there for the majority of my life. I'm now in Texas and really feel at home.

Anyway, the point of this thread:

I used to have a CA "approved" pistol I could take to CA. Now that pistol is no longer on the approved list. I'm not a CA resident, so, by CA law, I'd have to register all my weapons when moving there. For new residents there are NO grandfathered in weapons. If CA is anything like NY or NJ, if you are not a State resident you are screwed.

So, I'm looking for a new CA legal weapon to be able to travel there, and, even under their draconian laws still have some chance of wielding a weapon in lawful self defense.

If I buy ANOTHER CA legal pistol and it "falls off" of the approved list in three or four years, am I still covered? From my limited law knowledge, I don think so.

Comments and expertise would be much appreciated.

New Kimber

I just picked up my new Kimber, a Master Carry Custom, 5", 45 ACP, tritium night sights, stainless steel frame and slide, crimson trace red laser grips and bobtail. I have been wanting a bobtail and when I saw this pistol sitting in my LGS I just had to have it.
